The Italian authorities annually stage a large-scale military exercise, involving Air Force, Navy and Army assets to simulate a contemporary conflict scenario in which peace-keeping and peace-enforcement efforts have to be made according to fictious UN resolutions. Spring Flag exercise mobilises a considerable number of Italian air power assets and also involves other NATO air forces to bring the exercise to an even more realistic level. While Decimomannu AB hosted the Coalition troops (and therefore also the foreign participants), the OPFOR party was housed at Trapani AB.
